pi joins Earendil: Mario Zechner moves the project to a company home

On April 8, 2026, Mario Zechner — creator of pi and of the libGDX game framework — published a blog post titled “I’ve sold out”, announcing that he is joining Earendil, a Vienna-based AI software company co-founded by Armin Ronacher (known for Flask and Sentry), and taking pi with him as an Earendil product.

Practically, the arrangement means:

• The repository moved from badlogic/pi-mono to earendil-works/pi on GitHub.
• The pi core remains MIT-licensed and open source.
• Zechner retains technical direction over the project, while Earendil handles the business side.
• Reporting around the announcement indicates some future pi-related components may be source-available (Fair Source) or proprietary, aimed at enterprise use — but the agent itself stays open.
